Hiking above Stoos, Suisse

Ridge hike from Klingenstock to Fronalpstock

This hike leads through great swiss scenery always along on the top of the ridge between the two mountains Klingenstock and Fronalpstock above the mountain town of Stoos.

Once at the top of the mountain, the view on lake Lucerne is spectacular. We went on this hike in August, so weather was fine and no snow was on the trails anymore. Anything prior May would be outright dangerous given the narrow trail and steep hills and cliffs.

The tour start in the swiss town of Schwyz where we boarded one of the steepest rack railroads in the world. The ride took about 8 minutes and we gained about 2.000 ft in height in these 8 minutes.

The town of Stoos which is at the end of the railway cannot be reached by car (service vehicle only) and is therefore car free for the most part. The idyllic setting on a plateau is providing a vacation feeling right away. From the railway we hiked about 20 minutes up to the chairlift that would bring us up to the Klingenstock mountain, the starting point of the hike.

At the end of the chairlift, the ridge trail starts right away. The slopes from the ridge go down on either side for several hundred feet. Anybody doing this trail has to have no fear of heights and should be sure-footed on this type of terrain.

I will let pictures tell the remaining story of the trip. Hope you enjoy. Anybody having questions, feel free to contact me via the comment section.

Some useful facts:

Day ticket for all lifts including rack railroad is 40 Swiss Francs pP (status Aug/16).

Hike is approx. 6 km and takes about 2,5 hours. Total time needed including travel times in lifts, breaks etc is approx. 6 hours.

Rack railway runs every 30 minutes – check for actual schedule and any other information on the area on Stoos Website.

Schwyz is roughly 50km from Lucerne (coming from Basel). Once you exit the highway at Exit Schwyz, signs will lead the way to the railway.

Hope you liked the description as much as we liked the trip.
